Robin Hood BBC: The Costumes of Lady Marian Series 1 Part 4 (LAST)

We have now reached the last episode (and costume) of Series One. So therefore this the final post on Marian's costumes from this season.
This post contains only one costume 'Marian's Wedding dress'. As this outfit is my personal favourite I have gone a little overboard with the length and the pictures :) because I just couldn't chose between them so I have included them all. Enjoy :)

Episode Thirteen- A Clue: No

Costume # 16- "Marian's Wedding Dress"

I just adore this costume, it has such a medieval theme to it, without being over the top. The style is very fitting with the times.
The dress itself is quite simliar in style to many of Marian's previous dresses, especially with the long sleeves and the belt which hangs around her waist.  However the ruffles at the back of the dress, the intricate detailing all over the dress and the beading on the belt show, along with the make up, jewelery and veil, that this dress is much more special than the others. Although it is very hard to see, and I could not put up a better picture without giving more of the story away, I am absolutely in love with the shoes Marian wears with this costume. They are white lace up boots which have detailing very similar to that on her dress, they are gorgeous.

I think the colour of the dress is beautiful too, it gives Marian (Lucy's) skin a beautiful glow and sets off her hair colour beautifully. I am so glad that they did not use the traditional 'white' wedding dress because it just would not have suited the medieval era and I loved seeing something different.

Now the veil! The veil is my favourite part of this costume, it is so beautiful. Due to the fact that this show is set in rather medieval times I did not expect to see Marian wearing a veil, I guess I would picture Lady Marian to wear a wreath of flowers but I love what the costume designers have done here. You can also see that the colour of the veil is also the same colour as the flower details on her dress.

The veil is made out of lace, it is rather long at the back (in the picture above Marian is holding the bottom of it in her hand, as you can see it falls much below her waist line) but is quite short at the front which is really flattering. Across her head, is a crown of flowers, it is almost like a headband it gives the veil a touch of medieval style and also a little bit of royalty to it.

This costume is quite similar in many ways to the costumes that Marian has worn previously (apart from the addition of the veil) so what is it about this costume that I love so much? To be perfectly honest, my love of this outfit does not simply lie with the design or even the costume in general.
It all really comes down to memory, because as I stated in my Robin Hood Series One review I first came across this TV series after watching a YouTube video which included a scene from Series One. The scene, without giving too much away, had Marian in her wedding dresses running to meet someone :) So whenever I see this dress I am reminded of the first time I fell in love with this series.

Another reason I love this costume is, for me it represents so much, the episode (again trying not to give away too much information) details the inner struggle of Marian. We are presented with two versions of the character; the veiled Marian  and unveiled Marian.
The veiled Marian is very much hiding behind her veil. She is scared and this veil is like a barrier of safety which she has put this up, it masks her true feelings from those around her and serves as a form of protection. This Marian is strong and independant but has lost the fight, she can see no way out of the mess she has gotten into and frankly can't be bothered trying to dig herself out. She has resigned herself to the facts and in the end this metaphorical veil may protect her but it also makes her lose sight of the things that are most important to her, especially the value of truth, honesty and love.

When Marian rips off her veil, the audience get a sense of Marian departing from that person. She becomes the unveiled Marian, she is no longer going to hide her true feelings or hide behind her fears. This Marian, trusts her instincts and will not compromise or be forced into an action she may later regret.

Marian in this episode is extremely inspirational, and because this costume plays such a key role in the episode, it is no wonder that it is my favourite.

For those of you that have enjoyed this post series I will be looking at Marian's costumes from Series Two a little later in the year once I have finished a few other features (character profiles etc.) that I have planned which relate to Series One.

Love,
Mel xx

Robin Hood BBC: The Costumes of Lady Marian Series 1 Part 3

Here is the 3rd part of the costumes of Lady Marian from Series One. This part includes some of my favourites. I hope you enjoy it!

Episode Seven- Brothers in arms

Costume #14- I love this costume despite it looking a little too modern for the time period, I just love the colour and the hood. I supose this is one of the costumes that I believe the scene in the series makes the costume seem even better. I just love how she comes riding on her horse through the forest, the costume such a bright contrast to the green around her. Plus I love the little 'arguement' Marian and Robin have in this scene.

The above costume is the only new addition to Marian's wardrobe in this episode however we do see her wearing the grey army style dress and the Nightwatchman outfit (Costume's #7 and #8, see Part 1) and the *coughs* ugly nightgown (Costume #11, see Part 2).

Episode Eight- Tattoo? What Tattoo?

Costume #15-  It is very unfortunate that it was very hard to get some good screencaps of the entire dress because I love this dress, It is so beautiful! I think it suits the period and the story so well...It's just what I would imagine Lady Marian to wear. Of all Marian's dresses in Series One I believe this one is my second favourite. I can't tell you my first because it doesn't appear until much later in the series (If your a fan of the series you will have probably guessed which one by that comment). Anyway what I love about this dress is the style, the sleeves are beautiful and so long, and the beads around the top of the dress and the belt - they are just gorgeous. I really love the colour too, I prefer this deep red colour to the usual orange/peach colours Marian seems to wear.

The only other costume we see Marian wearing in this episode is the beautiful peach/orange hooded outfit (Costume #14, see above)
Episode Nine, Ten, Eleven & Twelve

During Episode Nine Marian does not wear a single costume that we have not seen in a previous episode. She is seen wearing Costume #9 (see Part 2), the Nightwatchman outfit (Costume #8) and one of her orange coloured dresses (Costume #4, see Part 1 )

Again we do not see any new costumes during Episode Ten, we see Marian wear the peach/orange hooded outfit again (Costume #14, see above) the same orange coloured dresses she wore in Episode 9 (Costume #4, see Part 1.

In Episode Eleven she is only seen wearing two different costumes; Costume #4 & #6 (see Part 1).

Episode Twelve see's Marian dressed in Costume #8, the Nightwatchman outfit (also see Part 1) and Costume #14 (see Part 3)
I hope you are enjoying these posts :)

ps. I apologise if you liked the nightgown

Robin Hood BBC: The Costumes of Lady Marian Series 1 Part 2

Here is Part 2 (Part 1 can be found here) of Lady Marian's costumes from Series One of the BBC TV Series Robin Hood. I have not included pictures for all of the costumes Marian is seen wearing in these episodes but rather only included images of the new costumes, those which did not appear in the first three episodes.

Episode Four- Parent Hood

Costume #9- This is another costume which I think fits the time period perfectly but is more something I would see her wearing if she was Marian the outlaw of Sherwood Forrest not Lady Marian of Knighton Hall. I love how the sleeves are tied onto the shoulders of the dress.

Costume # 10- Without giving too much away this outfit is not exactly one of Marian's choice. In this scene Marian is being made an example of by the Sheriff and the costume I believe rather mirrors that. It is old, almost worn out material and as you can see in the picture the neckline is hacked as if to suggest this costume is more suited to a slave or prisoner. Obviously it is not a favourite of mine but I think that the costume speaks for itself in this scene and has a very important role in helping the viewer understand the gravity of the situation Marian is in.

Besides these two costumes Marian, during this epsiode is also seen wearing Costume #6, the yellowish coloured two piece outfit seen in Episode 3.

Episode Five- Turk Flu

Costume # 11- Another costume I do not particuarly like, I assume from the scene that this costume is sort of like a nightgown as Marian throws this on when she recieves a surprise visit from Guy of Gisbourne.
I can't quite work out what I don't like about it but for some reason I feel maybe that is doesn't look all that complete/finished. If that makes any sense.

The only other costume apart from the one above that we see in this episode is Costume #3-with cape, which is the beautiful white belted dress we see in Episode One with the lovely tan coloured cape.

Episode Six- The Taxman Cometh

Costume #12- I love this costume. The colouring, style, everything is exquisite! What I love the most about this costume is the bead work around the neckline...isn't it beautiful, I just love beads on costumes. I think the colouring of this dress is perfect for Marian (Lucy Griffiths) it really suits her and I think it make alot of difference, when the colours suit the actor.

Costume #13- This is another costume I think is perhaps a little too modern for the time period but I do love it. If you look closely the dress appears to be exactly the same as Costume #12 (it even has the belt) without the beaded, stripy layer over the arms and around the front of the neckline and instead has a lovely cartigan over the top. My favourite part about this costume is the cartigan, although modern it is so pretty and something I would definitely wear :)

And once again in this episode we see Marian wearing the modern looking yellowish two-piece outfit that she wore in Episode three.

What are your thoughts on these costumes? Are there any Tv/Movie characters whom you admire their dress sense or costumes? If so who are they?

Robin Hood BBC: The costumes of Lady Marian Series 1 Part 1

Considering I had so much fun with the Robin Hood review (which you can find here) I've decided to do some more posts on the series. The first series of posts are looking at the costumes of Lady Marian in Series One, some of them are just so beautiful. I hope you enjoy it :)

Episode One- Will You Tolerate This?

Costume #1- The first time we are introduced to the character of Marian she is wearing the this costume to the left. It is an orange/red colour and has a beautiful corset-type vest. My favourite part about this costume is the detailing on the cuffs of the sleaves and around the neckline, I think it really adds to the dress.
Costume #2- I am not particularly fond of this costume (right), for the obvious placement of the tassels (would you call them tassels?) anyway I don't like them. But I love the colouring and style, the slate green/blue colour of the dress is so pretty especially with the offset of the orange/red of the detailing.
Costume #3- This costume is one of my favourites. Although it can be better seen in the picture below (with cape) the detailing at the neckline is absolutely gorgeous. The sleeves of the dress are so beautiful in the way that they widen and fall at mid arm. The belt is also a great addition.

Costume #3 - With Cape
The last scene we see Lady Marian in Episode 1 she is wearing the same dress as described above however she is also wearing a beautiful cape over the top of it.

Episode Two- Sheriff Got Your Tongue?

Costume #4- At first in Episode 2 Marian is again wearing Costume #1 however in the next scene she is shown wearing the costume to the left. By now the audience can see a continuing theme, with Marians costumes. I personally like this costume better than Costume #1 because I love the detailing, especially on the cuffs of the sleeves and around the front of the dress. I think the way that the detailing on the front is designed in such a way that it appears to go around the dress neckline, almost like a enormous necklace is gorgeous!

Costume #2-With Cape. Here Marian wears the same dress she wore in episode 1 (Costume #2) but this time with the cape she wore with Costume #3. In these scenes/pictures we can see the cape a lot better and particuarly the beautiful brooch type thing which is holding the cape together.

Episode Three- Who Shot the Sheriff?

Costume 5 -Episode 3 gives Marian a little more diversity when it comes to her costumes, this first one we see her in is in relatively the same style as her other ones, it is very similar in colouring to Costume #2, just a little bit lighter and without the red/orange colouring. alike many of the other dresses it has significant detailing epseically on the front and around the neckline. However unlike the other costumes this one has an extra layer, which stops 3/4 of the way down the dress, as can be seen in the full length picture, which is quite flattering.

Costume #6 - This costume I think is very different to all the others. It appears to be separated into a more modern two pieces rather that the traditional one piece style dresses she has been seen previously in. Im not not that crazy about the style I just don't think its really all that nice, but I do like the colour combinations -even though it seems to me an odd choice particularly for the time period.

Costume #7-  I find myself often referring to this dress as the army-dress. Although this isn't one of my favourites, its really growing on me! The style is once again similar to her other dresses but
less feminine and colourful than most of them. I imagine this dress would be something Lady Marian may have worn in the forest if she were part of Robin's gang, that is if it wasn't for the fact that dresses are impractical wardrobe choice for an outlaw.

Costume #8- Marians 'The Nightwatchman' outfit. This is definitely a favourite of mine, but not simply because I think it looks really cool but because I love what it stands for. And how by putting on this outfit, Marian is essentially assuming a new identity and able to do her bit for the poor and fight against injustice. That aside I love the cape, its so long and looks great and the leather top is so...Guy of Gisborne :)
I hope you enjoyed looking at Lady Marian's costumes from the first 3 episodes of Series One. I will have Part 2 up sometime soon :)

Of the outfits I have listed which are your favourites?
When watching a movie or a TV series do you often take note of what the character's are wearing?
