An Introduction to Herbert Pocket;

Note: I wrote this about a week ago and posted it on another site dedicated to Harry Lloyd. However lately I have been noticing I am getting a lot of Harry Lloyd related searches here on this blog, so I  have also decided to post this here. In other news I plan on having a Harry Lloyd page on this blog up and going in the next few days so that those who are interested can quickly find film information, pictures and posts about him.

An Introduction to Herbert Pocket;
Harry's character in Great Expectations

I recently began re-reading 'Great Expectations' by Charles Dickens purely so I could learn a little bit more about Herbert Pocket- the character Harry Lloyd will be portraying in the upcoming 'Great Expectations' TV series. I am not sure if this is of any interest to anyone but I thought I would post a little of what I learnt about the character for any fans of Harry who like me want to know a little about who this 'Herbert' is.
Harry Lloyd cast as Herbert Pocket in Great Expectations

NOTE: I have tried very hard to keep this article free of any major spoilers however in order to get a grasp on the character it is necessary to describe certain events and happenings in the novel.

The classic story 'Great Expectations' details the life of the young Phillip "Pip" Pirrip. To say the novel is told by Pip, follows Pip and is mostly about Pip is...well true. However while Pip is indeed the lead or title character there are also a handful of major characters in the novel and Herbert Pocket is one of them.
Eros Vlahhos to play the young Herbert (aka little Harry)

Herbert first enters the story as a young boy whom Pip by chance meets at Satis House. He is described by Pip as "a pale young gentleman with red eyelids and light hair". Pip also notes that "...he did not look very healthy-having pimples on his face, and a breaking out on his mouth". Herbert in this scene proceeds to challenge Pip to a fight. Due to Herbert being quite young in at this first meeting, the young Herbert Pocket is to be played by actor Eros Vlahhos not Harry Lloyd.

The story continues for quite a while and it seems as though we have seen the last of the 'pale young gentleman' however certain events take place which lead to the arrangement of the adult Pip staying in London with Mr. Herbert Pocket. They both soon realise that they had once met as young children and quickly strike up a friendship which is maintained during the entirety of the novel.

Herbert (Harry Lloyd) and Pip (Douglas Booth) become close friends
The adult Herbert is described to the reader once again through the eyes of Pip:

"Herbert Pocket had a frank and easy way with him that was very taking. I had never seen any one then, and I have never seen any one since, who more strongly expressed to me, in every look and tone, a natural incapacity to do anything secret and mean. There was something wonderfully hopeful about his general air, and something that at the same time whispered to me he would never be very successful or rich. I don't know how this was. I became imbued with the notion on that first occasion before we sat down to dinner, but I cannot define by what means.

He was still a pale young gentleman, and had a certain conquered languor about him in the midst of his spirits and briskness, that did not seem indicative of natural strength. He had not a handsome face, but it was better than handsome: being extremely amiable and cheerful. His figure was a little ungainly, as in the days when my knuckles had taken such liberties with it, but it looked as if it would always be light and young. Whether Mr. Trabb's local work would have sat more gracefully on him than on me, may be a question; but I am conscious that he carried off his rather old clothes, much better than I carried off my new suit."
(Chapter 22)

I love these two paragraphs; I included them because I believe that  the words used here to describe Herbert are a great representation of his character. It was also when reading these two paragraphs that the realisation sunk in that Harry really could be Herbert. It seems to me to be a great casting choice (particularly when taking into consideration the physical look of Herbert and comparing it to Harry's).

I think Harry is perfect casting for the 'pale young gentleman'

I don't particularly want to go any further into the life Herbert due to spoilers and the such but I would like to just give a short overview on my thoughts. While I was reading the novel, I will be honest in saying that, I did not find Herbert to be the most interesting of characters, but what is great about him is that he is true- in the most pure of forms. He remains friends with Pip - throughout all his adventures and misadventures and is for the lack of a better word a very adorable character. And I think it will be very easy to love Harry in this role.

So from reading the novel can we determine how much 'screen time' Harry may have as this character- unfortunately no. As any book-to-film adaptation many things sometimes have to be cut or are condensed to fit in the allotted time frame. Therefore it is impossible to tell at this point how often Harry will appear. However in the novel he is a key character and has many lines and has an important role in educating the adult Pip. Also so far it also appears that Harry is listed as being in all of the three episodes of the series which is a really good sign that he shall be in the series quite a bit.

I did not add this on the post on the other site but I thought for those of you who have already read the novel and were not too concerned about spoilers I would add this SPOILER ALERT Herbert in the novel admits to being quite in love with Clara, he keeps this quite secret as she is considered below his station. With this in mind I have been quite excited to see who would be cast as Clara Barley, Herbert's love interest and it appears that actress Perdita Weeks is to portray her. Some of the Jane Austen fan's may know Perdita from her role in Lost in Austen in which she played the role of Lydia Bennet. I really enjoy her as Lydia and I am looking forward to seeing her in the role of Clara.  END OF SPOILER

Much love,

Harry Lloyd cast in "Closer to the Moon" 2013

I am always quite excited when I hear my favourite actors picking up roles but none more so than Harry Lloyd.

Deadline Magazine released the exclusive news on August 31st that Harry had been cast in the lead role in the period drama Closer to the Moon. He will be starring alongside the likes of Vera Farmiga and Mark Strong. The film, set in Bucharest 1959, follows a group of anti-Nazi revolutionaries as they rob a bank under the pretense of shooting a film. They are subsequently arrested and sentenced to death but not before being forced to reenact the robbery for a propaganda film.

It sounds like quite an interesting storyline however, naturally I wont be deciding on whether or not I will watch this film until further plot and rating information is known, so at present I am just reporting this information rather than promoting it (if you understand what I mean). Anyway with the film set for release in 2013 we still have a while to wait.

Thankfully for all us Harry fans out there we still have much to look forward to in the nearer future with many countries still awaiting the DVD release of  Jane Eyre (in which he plays Richard Mason) and his upcoming roles in The Iron Lady (as the young Denis Thatcher) and BBC One's Great Expectations (as Herbert Pocket).
Love,

Screencap fun

I finally decided to organise some of my Robin Hood screencaps...well mind you they could just as easily be called my Will Scarlett screencaps as just about every picture has Will in it. Anyway I came across a few which I thought I would share with any Allan A Dale fans:

I'm not being funny but... Allan's (the guy on the left-hand side) face in these screencaps certainly made my day!

For fans of the show you may remember these pictures from Season 1 Episode 5- "Turk Flu" in which Allan at the end gets quite sick (hence is appearance in these above shots). Poor Allan! He does look horrible!

A random post about Jane Eyre 2011

Yesterday was the 11th of August, a date that in previous years signified nothing in particular. It was just one of those days which passed by as many do with little remembrance or consequence. However August 11, 2011 was an entirely different matter altogether! Here in Australia it was the day that Jane Eyre (2011) was to hit cinemas.
I was very blessed in the fact that, last night- on the very day it opened I was able to see the film! But not before dropping numerous hints throughout the day about my desire to see it :)
Richard Mason (Harry Lloyd) being carried by
Mr. Rochester (Michael Fassbender)
I must confess however, that the driving motivation for seeing this film was all because of an actor. This film was to be the first time I would see Harry Lloyd act in something other than Robin Hood (BBC TV Series), so I was quite excited.  In the theatre I waited, rather impatiently for his a his character to emerge, and when he finally made his appearance I must admit that a rather girlish squeal tried to escape which thankfully was suppressed as I firmly nudged my sister in the seat next to me and whispered
                          "It's Harry!"
And of course I must say that the few (extremely short) scenes in which he was in were the best in the entire film- yes, perhaps I am biased but it's okay I can admit it.

The movie itself I thought had its ups-and-downs but in general I really enjoyed it (but I will write about that another time).

Unfortunately I could not find one picture of Harry in the film to add to this post. I did however find a fan video with a small clip- of which I took a screencap of and added it above, sorry for the poor quality. But in the film I thought he looked quite handsome and his hair was gorgeous.

Have you ever seen a movie simply because you liked the actors?

Much love,

Mel xx

PS. Are there any Harry Lloyd fans out there that were outraged at the Jane's lack of care when tending to his injuries? She hardly helped him at all, instead she chose to snoop around the room.

Harry Lloyd joins Great Expectations (TV Series 2012)

Okay so I'm about a week or so behind on this news but I just found this out and of course I had to post about it right away because I love Harry and Great Expectations.

Next year is the bicentenary of Charles Dickens’ birth and it seem many will be celebrating, book lovers all over the world will pull out their dusty and well worn copies of The Adventures of Oliver Twist and David Copperfield in honour of the famous author. While others will get together, drink tea and enjoy watching Little Dorrit or Our Mutual Friend or perhaps one of the two new screen adaptations of Great Expectations.
Yes, 2012 will see that we all get quite a heavy dose of this Dickens novel as both a film and a TV Series are in production. Personally I am/have been looking forward to the TV Series in particular as it is to be a BBC production and will be much longer than the movie (In general I find that series' tend to be closer to the novel as they have more time to fit the story in). However for those of you who are familiar with the story, you will probably understand why I am excited at the prospect of seeing Helena Bonham Carter portraying Miss Havisham in the film version.

Anyway, back on topic- Harry has been cast in the role of Herbert Pocket. For those of you who can't exactly remember or don't know who that is- Herbert is Pip's best friend, they first meet as young boys and Herbert challenges Pip to a fight. As young men they meet again and share an apartment together in London. I only remember this rather vague information about Herbert so I think I will have to re-read the novel to see what I think of Harry playing this character :)

In any case I think Charles Dicken's would be happy (and very proud) that his great-great-great-grandson is acting in a TV adaptation of his novel.

The Great Expectations TV Series is set to air this Christmas on BBC One.

I hope you all are having/have a great day :)

Love Mel xx

Robin Hood BBC: A Confession

I am so glad that I am doing this post series of Robin Hood (BBC TV-series) because it means I can get away with this particular post without sounding too...fan girl-ish :)

So I have a confession to make in regards to this TV series- When watching the series, lately I have been skipping scenes- well to be more precise I have been fast-forwarding every scene apart from the ones that have, oh my this is a little embarrassing - Will Scarlett (Harry Lloyd) in them.

Okay, so this isn't too bad right? WRONG! *cries* I am in the middle of writing up character profiles for this blog, how can I write about Much or Marian or even Robin when all I am watching is Will.

Let me show you an example:

Character profile: Marian

Marian is beautiful, independant and intelligent. Intelligent? She wasn't Intelligent! If she was she would have fallen in love with Will- obviously he is the nicest, kindest, handsomest guy on the show. Seriously going for Robin over Will shows her lack of Intelligence. Of course I love Will and Djaq and I would never really want Marian and Will to be together, but COME ON... who chooses Robin when there is Will Scarlett!

See what I mean- Okay I will try again.

Character profile: Allan A Dale

Allan is -Arghh it was his fault that WILL GOT PUNCHED BY ROBIN! It was all his fault and then there was that time he persuaded Will...Ohh no Allan is a bad example to use in this case, I better stop here I will give away too many spoilers, resisting the urge to continue with rant...yep better stop...now!

I suppose you get the point now, so I will leave it at that.

Well I am sorry if this post was boring, I know this was quite a silly rant but I just couldn't help myself. I'd love to know that I am not completely crazy though, so if you also skip entire scenes in some movies or tv shows,  just so you can see your favourite characters or scenes, I love to know. Hopefully I'm not as crazy as I feel :)

Much Love,

Mel xx

ps. I realise it might seem I don't like Marian or Allan- I actually love them both! My brain was just overcome with Will Scarlett/Harry Lloyd disease :)

pps. I LOVE Harry Lloyd...Love, Love, Love...sorry :) fan girl moment well and truly over :)

Series Review; Robin Hood (BBC TV) Series 1

Title: Robin Hood- Complete Series One (2006)

Starring: Jonas Armstrong, Lucy Griffiths, Richard Armitage and Keith Allen.

My Rating: 9.5/10
The series begins with the return of Robin of Locksley (Jonas Armstrong) and his faithful servent Much (Sam Troughton) from the crusades in the Holy Land. Expecting to return to his lands just as he had left it, Robin approches Locksley with a joyous heart only to find his lands and all that of Nottingham are now under the rule of an evil new Sheriff of Nottingham (Keith Allen).
Seeing the injustices of his people Robin refuses to do the Sheriff's bidding and is stripped of his title and lands and chooses to live in the forest as an outlaw. With the help of some wonderful characters including: Will Scarlett (Harry Lloyd), Allan A Dale (Joe Armstrong) , Little John (Gordon Kennedy) and Roy (William Beck), Robin embarks on a life full of danger as he battles against the Sheriff and Sir Guy of Gisborne.
One thing that Robin has up on the Sheriff and Guy is his secret informer and ally, the beautiful Lady Marian (Lucy Griffiths).

Robin's Gang: (from left) Much, Little John, Robin,
Will, Allan and Roy

I am not much of a TV person but when I saw a small clip from this series I was hooked and within the week I had my own copy of the first series. I thought the first episode was a little slow and although it sets the story and introduces the characters it really isn't a reflection of the entire series. This is my favourite re-telling of the legend of Robin Hood, which has been a beloved story of mine since I was a little girl.

Jonas Armstrong as Robin, Lucy Grifiths as Lady Marian
 and Richard Armitage as Guy

Jonas Armstrong plays a charming, charismatic Robin who has some what of an ego but truly cares for his people and those suffering under the Sheriff. Keith Allen is brillant as the Sherrif, his performance is so gritty and evil its like he was born for the role. Richard Armitage's Guy of Gisborne is pure genius, he is strong and nasty but you can see this vulnerability in him and weakness at times. He really builds his character and despite him being the right-hand man of the evil Sheriff, as each episode goes by you begin to like him at little bit more.

Lucy Griffiths plays the lovely Lady Marian. This was Lucy's first major re-occuring role and she did a great job, she is beautiful, strong and independent. She was also only 19 when they began filming!
Sam Troughton is awesome as Much and most of the comedy comes from his character and that of the trickster Allan A Dale played by Joe Armstrong. Gordon Kennedy is fierce as Little John and Willam Beck is so cute as Roy, however I find it hard to watch his character as he also played John Thorpe in Northanger Abbey 2007, so its hard to take his character seriously.

My favourite character in the whole series is without a doubt Will Scarlett, he is so passionate about the sufferings of the people particularly as he has experienced it first hand. Harry Lloyd is a wonderful actor, He brings Will Scarlett to life and I just love how Harry builds Will's character into a strong but very feeling man. Harry's performance was so good that I have keenly been following his career as I think their are some great things in the future for him, if you have seen David Copperfield 1999 you may recognise him as the young Steerforth and coincidently Harry actually is th great-great-great-grandson of author Charles Dickens! He is also in the newest version of Jane Eyre (2011) which I am dying to see.

The costumes and the setting of this series are just so beautiful I would encourage you to see this series for that alone. If you are a fan of the Robin Hood legend, or this time period this is definitely something you should see!

If your interested here is a short trailer for the first series, which I found on YouTube
